Sisonke Msimang is a young South African woman that takes us along her journey through exile alongside her family. She touches upon topics such as childhood, politics, identity, fear, love, and more. I felt empowered and honored to receive this offer. I illustrated her based on a portrait I received. I love including lines in my artwork. Since Sisonke Msimang’s story is about traveling and going from one place to another I wanted to engrave that somehow visually by adding lines to her head wrap as well as her clothing. Further linework can be found at the beginning and end of the book. In addition to the illustration, I created a custom typeface for the title and subtitle.
